Buqu Formation

Buqu Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Middle Jurassic, (TJ31)

Province:
Qinghai

Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Bai Haisheng in 1989. The naming section is located at Yanshiping on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, Qinghai Province, with its reference section being situated 7 km southeast Quemo Co, Tanggulashan Township, Germu (Golmud) City, Qinghai Province. Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" suggests it is the lower-middle formation in the Yanshiping Gr.

Synonym: (布曲组)

Lithology and Thickness

It is composed of grey-black massive bioclastic limestone and grey thick-bedded crystalline limestone, intercalated with bioclastic limestone and dark-grey thick-bedded dolomitic micrite and brecciated limestone, with a thickness of 674 m. The basal part of it is marked by the occurrence of black massive bioclastic limestone, and serves as the boundary between it and the underlying TuotuoheJur Fm.

Lithology Pattern:
Limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation is in a conformable contact with the underlying TuotuoheJur Fm

Upper contact

It is in a conformable contact with the overlying Xiali Fm

Regional extent

The formation is distributed essentially in the area of Banglong Co, Quem Tso and Yanshiping, Germu (Golmud) County, with a consistent lithology, but a great change in thickness, varying from 266 m to 1698 m.

GeoJSON

Fossils

In the Yanshiping area the formation yields the middle and late Bathonian bivalves: Camptonectes laminatus, Anisocardia beaumonti, Myopholas acuticostata, Pholadomya pretei, Ceromyopsis? striata; brachiopods: Kallirhynchia orbis, K. superba, Pseudotubuthyris powerstockensis, P. globata, Pseudowattonithyris inflata, P. depressa, Wattonithyis fullonica, Sphaeroidothyris pentagonus, belonging to shallow-sea carbonate deposits.

Age

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Buqu Fm spanned the Bathonian.
